Self-Defense Charts
OBJECTIVE: Never fight unless you must; Always stay on your feet
and fight standing up when possible; If you must go to the ground
get top mount position; If top mount can not be gotten then go for
the Guard Position; Prevent your opponent from getting the Top Mount
position at all costs and NEVER, NEVER, NEVER allow your opponent to
get behind your back while on the ground or standing.

KNIFE AND REFLEX TRAINING
21. Knife around throat - Trap knife hand -
use monkey grip - then put both hands on his knife hand- put
pressure at wrist- do arm bar break or move out away from knife- do
groin kicks and attack the eyes and throat.
22. Mid-section thrust - Downward block with
knife hand - other hand over the top and pull opponent into arm
lock, or block and attack with everything: kicks, punches, gouges
etc.
23. High thrust - X Side block with rear hand
inside - Do wrist locks or arm bars or unload with Kicks, punches
gouges etc.
24. High Downward Stab -" X "Block and same as
above.
SITTING TECHNIQUES
25. Sitting with table in front - Attack comes
over the top of table.
26. Sitting with table in front - Attack comes
from either end or either side.
27. Sitting with table in front - Attack comes
from behind.
DISTANCE COVERING
28. Use your front foot like a boxer uses a
jab to keep him at a distance.
29. Always stay his arms length away.
30. When you close the gap - Punch or kick on
way in.
31. Do a double leg take down (Moroto Gari)
and go for mount.
32. Close Gap punching and kicking- If you
must go down - Do Valley Drop or take down behind.
33. When closing gap - put skip in step and
kick to knee - then deliver technique.
STREET KICKS
34. Front kick - Knee block straight kick -
heel palm smash
35. Side kick - lead arm carried at chest
level- protects ribs and allows for blocking on low kicks after
block move on V-angle or 45% past opponent with hand techniques.
36. Round house - block with high hand while
foot is still low - trap leg under lead arm - heel palm to face-
step behind opponent's stationary foot - do take down.
37. Groin kick - knee block - don't set foot
down - straight kick with same foot.
BASIC DRILLS FOR GROUND FIGHTING
38. Break fall to front

MOUNT DEFENSE
76. Swim technique - block punches and roll
opponent
77. Opponent has his hands on you thighs to
block your escape- lift up on his hands.
78. Opponent has extended his hands to do
cross choke-lift up in praying position between his hands. Do half
nelson or apply a choke of your own.
79. Do outside leg pass using shrimp technique
and knee hand check- then go for full mount
80. You are on bottom- trap opponent’s wrist
in monkey grip- other hand trap behind opponents elbow-trap his foot
and lift hips up and over.
81. Do the same technique except trap
opponents arm first then do roll.
82. Do skating to move opponent down on waist.
83. Do shrimp craw and get one foot loose at a
time- going into guard.
84. You are on bottom- trap opponents wrist-
sit-up put your arm behind elbow-Get you own wrist- sit back and to
the side into arm lock.
85. If you can't do arm lock-then do
guillotine and sit back.
86. If opponent is in mount and gets his hand
under your neck for choke- push his bicep against you neck and do
standard bump and roll.
87. Elbow escape- Elbows on floor (you are on
bottom) Shrimp up and push elbow down- your leg comes under his -
shrimp to other side- hand on his knee - bring your knee through and
put him in guard.
88. When doing the above technique if you
can't get the second leg through- then trap his arm against your
neck and do bump and roll.
89. If opponent puts leg out to brace then go
into guard position by going under his bracing leg.
90. If he hooks his legs in top mount to keep
you from rolling- Straighten your legs one at a time.
MOUNT OFFENSE
91. Your on top-person bench presses you-Put
pressure on his chest-trap his extended arm-swing you foot over his
head- do arm bar.
92. Your on top-do X block over either arm-
put your hand under his trapped arm-get your own wrist- pull down
and lift up into chicken wing.
93. Your on top- do cross choke.
94. You are on top-do sliding lapel choke-
except put your fist into his throat and make it a thrusting choke.
95. Do nutcracker
96. You are on top- opponent rolls to avoid
your punches do Hodiki Jime - naked choke
YOU HAVE HIM IN GUARD
97. HIS HAND ON YOUR CHEST OR FLOOR - TRAP HIS
WRIST- SIT UP- YOUR ARM OVER TOP- GET YOUR OWN WRIST- SIT BACK AND
SHIFT YOUR HIPS - DO ARM BAR.
98. Do same technique- do guillotine
99. He is in your guard- puts his knee up and
tries to pass guard - put your calve on his thigh- hold gi and his
elbow just like escaping mount- do scissor- your knee in his
stomach- take him down and you go to top mount.
100. Opponent tries to pass guard by putting
his hand under your leg - Shift your hips and do triangle choke.
101. If he blocks your triangle choke- shift
your hips and do cross body arm bar.
102. Opponent stands up while you have him in
guard- As he stands up let your feet go to his hips. Lift with your
legs and pull over top- roll up into top mount.
103. Opponent stands up while you have him in
guard- put you knees in his chest- get his ankles- push back with
knees.
104. Opponent is tying to choke you from top
mount- with your legs pull him in and do half nelson - If his arm is
on your neck push it off by pushing from the bottom up - feet on
ground - slide out to side - mount him from the back side - put
hooks in his legs. Your goal is to mount his back and do choke.
105. If opponent has his legs or knees real
wide to prevent you from rolling him - do shrimp and put foot on his
knee and pull on his arms and upper body do roll.
YOU ARE IN HIS GUARD ON TOP
106. Pull his body close and up on your
thighs- this keeps him from sitting up.
107. Escape from his guard - Break open his
legs by getting his belt and putting your elbows into his thighs.
Keep your head up to avoid triangle choke- put your hand under his
leg and get hold of his lapel with the same hand- push your weight
up and slide over into side mount establish base and mount him.
108. Same technique except walk with little
steps toward his head and roll over on his back into leg bar.
109. You are in his guard - step back and put
a knee in his straddle or crack- push down- when legs come open-
slide one knee up on his thigh and push the other knee out as you go
into mount.
110. You are in his guard - stand up - squeeze
his knees in - put your hand under his knee and turn him on his side
and do side mount or top mount.
111. There are many leg locks and chokes that
can be done starting with you in the guard. See leg section.
SIDE MOUNT
112. You are applying Head Lock from side
mount- Arm bar with arm under leg - Right knee under opponents Right
shoulder- Left foot over his Right wrist and apply arm bar.
113. You are in his headlock - Roll up on your
hip - hook your leg over his body - shift weight up into top
position - apply pressure to neck and do arm bar.
114. Your opponent has you in headlock and he
is in side mount - He scissors his legs- you shift your legs back -
Do a "Frame" on neck and push opponent backward - do mount.
115. You are in side mount - do chicken wing-
High.
116. You are in side mount - opponent
straightens out his arm to side - Do arm bar and lift - up with hand
on bottom.
117. You are in side mount- opponent has arm
down to side do wrist or chicken wing.
118. Your opponent has you in side mount
headlock- Frame under his jaw- move your legs back out of way- push
him back, but not all the way to the floor- put you Left leg across
his head and throat and do a scissor neck squeeze.
119. If opponent won't let you get the leg
scissors- then take him back and roll up into top mount.
120. If opponent balls up on floor and you get
into top mount on his back - Sit behind him - hook legs into this
mid-section sit back and lift him up and do naked choke.
121. You are in side mount across his body -
He attempts a guillotine type choke or headlock- You trap his arm
against your neck or chest - Place your hand in front of his hips to
keep him from following you and walk around his body - when you are
parallel to his body - get his belt with both hands and do smother
technique.
122. When you are in side mount - opponent
leaves his elbow up and you go under it- if he is so strong you
can't control or lock his arm out for arm bar - then slide your hand
through at his elbow and get you own gi and sit back into arm bar.
123. Your in side mount and want to go to
mount - Do choking arm blade across his choke- when he reacts to
that - quickly go into top mount.
124. When a person is in side mount and does a
reversal of his feet usually in a scissors- he is about to attempt a
mount- as his foot come across your body- put your hand around his
waist and bridge up and roll him back and go into top mount.
125. From side mount you are on bottom- Shrimp
up on side facing opponent- go on all four's and put both hands on
one leg and do a one leg take down.
126. Opponent has successfully walked around
behind you and is doing smother technique- bridge- shoot one arm
straight up and roll opponent over.
SIDE / TOP MOUNT
127. Your on bottom- opponent is on top/side
mount- Roll up on your side - Do a frame under his throat - push him
back - put your leg across his head and take him back.
128. Opponent on bottom - Your in top/side
mount - He has his arm down to side - trap at wrist and other arm
under elbow and get your own wrist - rock back to apply arm lock.
129. Opponent on bottom- Slide one hand under
his neck- feed lapel into that hand - then do slide lapel choke.
130. Opponent is on his side- Place your arm
under his neck - Push his top elbow to side and trap his wrist with
the hand under his neck-Put your body weight on him and roll him on
to his stomach- Do naked choke.
131. Opponent on his side- Reach under his
neck- feed lapel into your hand that went under his neck- Sit back
and pull him up into a sitting position- put hooks in and do naked
choke.
CHOKES
132. Opponent on all four's like a wrestlers
position - mount his back and put your hooks in- go to either side
with both hands to pull one arm down. Do Hodiki Jime.
133. You don't have to put your hand under his
nose when he is blocking your coke- just switch hands and choke from
other side.
134. Your on bottom - put both hands in his gi
from bottom- the hand on top goes over his head and you do a
twisting neck choke.
135. Your in guard on bottom - Bring him down
- feed gi around to other hand - as you come from behind his head do
sliding lapel choke.
136. Sit up from bottom do cross choke.
137. Sit up from bottom and do guillotine.
138. You are in top mount- bend over put one
hand under his neck- put hand under his throat and push back - Place
your shoulder under his chin and do hyper extension of his neck by
pushing with your legs.
TO CLINCH
139. Kick low to knee - slide in at waist wrap
arm around- you can be over or under his arms. Do a variety of take-
downs from there.
TAKE DOWNS
140. Valley drop
141. He punches you block and slide in to his
waist from side- lock your hands and drive your thumb into his ribs
- do Kosoto Gari - outer sweep into takedown and mount - keep head
up.
142. Do clinch and Valley drop from front
pulling him back to your rear.
143. If you want to put him into your guard
and both of you are standing - Step back put your foot on his pelvic
bone - hold with arm and sit down - this makes him come forward- put
him in guard as you go down.
144. Moroto Gari - Into top mount - use monkey
grip behind his legs at knees.
145. Shoot waist- keep head up- lift one leg
step back and lay him down into top mount.
146. Kosoto Gari - pull with your left hand -
push with your right hand,
147. Ogoshi - Hip throw- block punch move into
4 corner position complete throw.
148. Standard grip- opponent pushes against
you- sit down put foot in stomach and throw.
FOOT AND LEG LOCKS FROM A SITTING POSITION
149. Standard foot lock- facing each other -
arms choking his mid-calve area.
150. Standard foot lock- facing each other-
arms choking his ankle- You are hyper extending ankle.
151. If you are in guard - stand up - put one
knee in his straddle - step back with the other foot - Apply foot
lock.
152. Same technique as above- opponent tries
to sit up - this is impossible if you have him pulled in close with
his straddle on your thigh- If he does manage this - apply a sliding
lapel choke with the fist going into his throat for a thrust.
153. Stand up and take baby steps over his
head and do leg lock from his rear. Hold his collar to prevent him
trapping your ankles and taking you down.
154. If you have broken his legs loose and
you are standing - slide your arms back to the ankle - put other
hand under and apply pressure to toes for ankle lock.
155. Same position as above- lock his leg
against your shoulder and apply pressure above the knee and rock
back and forward on that pressure point.
156. If you have been in guard - it has been
broken and opponent is now standing - Put your leg through between
his legs and curl back around his extended leg- push back for take
down and apply leg lock.
157. If you are sitting- To defend against
foot lock -opponent has you in leg lock - push his foot off your
hip- push your legs in as much as possible - get his collar - sit up
into top mount.
158. If you are caught in foot lock while
sitting - you can counter with a foot lock of your own - Push the
leg of your hip that your opponent has put there - roll to side and
apply foot lock of your own.
159. If you are applying foot lock and you
want a different one- put his toes pointed toward your arm pit - the
arm form that side goes under his heel - and back up to trap your
other wrist - you have an ankle lock.
STANDING ARM BARS
160. You and partner in standard start grip -
swing your leg up to your partners side- sit straight down- shift
hips to side - hold partners elbow all the way down- you are now on
your back with your partner still standing- put your leg over his
head and lift your hips as you apply arm bar.
161. Do same technique except trap his extended
hand at the wrist and elbow and apply arm bar.
162. Swing leg past partner to do Kosoto Gari
or outer sweep- your partner resists and pulls you back to mat - Let
your knee come across his stomach- hold his elbow and lift hips into
arm bar.
163. If you are standing and your opponent
goes for a one leg take down - Sit straight down and do the above
technique.
164. If you would like to do a choke instead
of arm bar- start in standard position do "X" choke on gi- put your
feet on his- sit straight sown and pull him into guard position.
165. Opponent throws punch - Do Ude Gatame -
standing arm bar- your armpit that is over hisshoulder should point
straight toward the ground.
166. If you are on all four's and your
opponent tries to kick you in the ribs- trap his leg against your
side - roll on his knee- this is very painful -as he goes down roll
into a top mount or get up.
MISCELLANEOUS DEFENSES
167. Defense Against a Chicken Wing - Opponent
has your arm pinned to floor above your head while you are on your
back - Shrimp up on your side facing your opponent - keep your arm
pinned to the floor so he can't get his hand under the elbow.
168. If opponent is trying to do arm bar -
before he gets sit down and as he sits back - get a hold of your own
gi with the arm he is trying to trap- take your free hand and push
his leg off your head- then roll up into his guard.
169. To prevent a choke from behind - lock
your head to side and put your free hand by your neck to prevent his
hand.
170. Keep head up to prevent lapel choke.
171. If opponent attempts nutcracker - you put
your arm through inside and trap his arm and do standard bump and
roll.
172. If you are caught in Hadiki Jime or naked
choke from behind - It is nearly impossible to block or escape. Put
your hand over your head and trap his hand with your free hand when
he reaches around to apply choke. Be aware you leave your wrist
across your head open for wrist lock.
173. If you are sitting and your opponent
applies choke from behind- cross his legs in front of you and bring
your ankle across his crossed feet and sit back. This is very
painful.
174. If opponent is behind and is doing the
sliding Lapel choke - Do the arm over the head and grab his hand
just like above - Arch your back-up - wiggle and push back with your
legs - push up on his arm that is around your head- your head should
escape under his arm - roll up into guard position.
175. If opponent is doing a sliding choke and
you are sitting up - When his arm comes around - Put both of your
hands on his one hand and straighten his arm out in front of you and
do arm bar.
AIKIDO AND DE PASQUALE JIU-JITSU
176. When applying arm bar - if opponent is to
strong and pulls back - then go into wrist lock.
177. Side mount choke - your on bottom - Keep
your elbow on floor grab your own leg and squeeze side of neck.
178. Side mount wrist lock - trap wrist
against your chest and apply wrist lock.
179. Guard position - double arm bar - you are
on bottom in guard - trap both arms of your opponent against your
chest Push or skate back-cross both of your legs behind or in front
of your opponent's neck and squeeze with your legs.
180. Guillotine choke - As a result of Moroto
Gari or double leg take down - If you are applying the guillotine be
sure to cross legs - If you are the one that is being trapped by the
guillotine - walk around on your knees to opponents back and apply
arm lock or smother technique. Don't forget to block his body with
your hand to keep him from following you and preventing the smother.
181. Tackle at head level - put hands behind
opponents neck-Reverse chop or pull back into his neck- Lock his
head under your shoulder- twist neck and step back as you take him
down.
182. Tackle at Mid-section level - pop ear -
catch head like football and twist your body - step back and drop
him.
183. Tackle at ankle level - push head down
and grab front of throat with open hand.
184. Single leg take down - Strike or hit to
face or throat and push nose to ceiling - lift one leg and drive
through - your knee on his inter-thigh - other leg up and an arm bar
applied across your knee.
185. Moroto Gari double leg take down - cross
legs on his waist - raise your pelvis up to create pressure on
ankles.
186. Opponent throws back fist - Hook block
like Seisan kata - smack or heel palm face - heel palm to lower back
with other hand- Kosoto gari outer sweep on back of knee.
187. Opponent throws straight punch - Block
and strike with an Isshin-Ryu thumb two inches below navel - apply
heel palm to face and kick to groin.
188. Person throws punch to your head - Do
reinforced side block or "X" block- throw back fist with your lead
hand - chop back into bend of his elbow- lift up - put your hand
under his arm and apply wrist lock take down.
189. Opponent does high tackle or throws a
punch- both hands go pass opponents neck - strike to back of
opponents neck - trap his neck against your shoulder - step back and
twist opponents neck.
190. Person grabs wrist - bring your hand up
to face level - reach under with other hand and get thumb - step
back and so a pull takedown.
191. Partner throws punch - Use Hook block and
step to outside. Do "Key" punch to ribs or armpit - step under and
lock partners arm over your shoulder - step forward and turn to face
partner - use same throw as above.
192. Lapel grab -strike his wrist and twist
same wrist with your other hand until the back of his hand is
against your chest - Do above takedown.
193. Partner attacks over hand with knife -
use chop block - reach under and get thumb of attack arm and do
above takedown.
194. Partner gabs from behind and puts finger
into your neck- step back and bring your hand up in a high arch over
both of his arms. Lock both of his arms and put your fingertips into
his throat.
195. Partner strikes overhead - you block with
open shuto high block - you step in and strike the throat - slip the
same hand you strike with into the bend of his elbow and bend arm
back into wrist lock.
196. Partner is choking from behind with belt
or chain - Put thumb under belt - strike groin - use foot or hip
throw
197. Bear hug - Strike groin step behind and
lift legs - then drop on your knee in his lower back.
